Trelleborg supplies Chinese locomotive springs
Trelleborg Industrial AVS has won a second contract to supply CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Works of China with Metalastik® suspension components for a new batch of SS5 locomotives destined for export to Iran.
The company will supply 112 hourglass bearer springs for the secondary suspension of 12 locomotives. The Metalastik® springs are mounted in pairs, 4 per bogie, 8 per locomotive and they will carry a total loco body weight of 50 tonnes.
Metalastik® hourglass springs consist of two hemispheres of rubber bonded to top, bottom and central steel plates, giving competitive load capacity and all-round flexibility. The design accommodates high horizontal, torsional and conical displacements, with vertical frequencies of 1.8 to 2.5Hz. The hourglass design combines ride performance with simplicity, long service life and low maintenance.
The CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Works is located in Hunan Province and the locomotive’s SS prefix commemorates the nearby town of Shaoshan, birthplace of Chairman Mao Ze Dong. The company builds approximately 300 locomotives a year, of twelve different designs. The SS5 is a heavy-haul BoBo electric locomotive and will be pulling passenger trains at speeds up to 140 kph, when it enters service in Iran.
