Araldite® 2011 high performance adhesive is being used by jewellery manufacturers worldwide to enhance the bonding of Marcasite stones into a variety of pieces including rings, earrings, brooches, necklaces and cuff-links. total of around five hundred million Marcasite stones are set by these jewellers each year.
Araldite® 2011 is already widely used in a range of manufacturing industries and has been used in the production of all types of goods from pocket knives and high performance sports bicycles to kitchen appliances and golf clubs.
For this latest delicate and highly detailed application, the Marcasite stones are supplied by Austrian-based jewellers Swarovski and are part of the company’s Enlightened™ Product Group. Most of Swarovski’s customers now use Araldite® 2011 two component epoxy paste as the preferred adhesive to bond Marcasite stones as it gives the jewellery an enhanced sparkle.
By bonding the stones using adhesives rather than metal-based mounting and joining methods, it adds to the aesthetic appearance of the jewellery. Bonding with Araldite® means there are no visible settings on the finished pieces, unlike traditional setting methods that use prongs and bezels. It is a very simple process – surface preparation of the stone and setting with an alcohol-based de-greasing agent; the pale yellow adhesive is dispensed into the cavity setting then the jeweller places the stone into the cavity and the setting is completed with no visible bond.
“For our customers, using the Araldite® adhesive gives the piece a flawless finish, with no small claws or metal casings holding the stone in place,” said Product Manager at Swarovski, Christoph Lechmann. “This new technique offers a better reflection of the sparkle,” he added.
Swarovski provides genuine Marcasite stones – cut from Pyrite – to their customers for producing many types of jewellery. By bonding with Araldite® 2011 this means even stones in the 1-2mm size range can be used.
Araldite® 2011 is a multi purpose adhesive with a long working life, giving jewellers the time to set and check a piece before it bonds, so it is the perfect choice for this type of intricate application.
