How can sawing productivity be improved ? Regarded as a basic machine tool,it can regularly be the cause of bottlenecks in the supply chain. The conventional answer to increase capacity is often more machines with more operators, but this does not improve productivity. Faced with this dilemma, Production Hydraulic Cylinders (PHC) in Cramlington adopted a radical approach. David Smith (PHC’s industrial engineer) analysed their sawing operation and discovered how little time the saws were actually cutting.
Productivity was down to 65% and material handling was the major problem. “The saw operators were spending too much time loading and unloading, so that actual cutting time was curtailed”.
