Safer drinks handling

A safe working environment is provided for staff at A G Barr’s soft drinks distribution centre in Cumbernauld through installation of Troax machine guarding systems which protect a variety of automated materials handling equipment.

Troax Safe-Fix machine fencing was used to enclose a complex layout of automated conveyors, stacker cranes and other materials handling equipment which operate over a number of levels. The work was carried out during a major expansion of the Cumbernauld site, which involved construction of the 32m high distribution centre to replace Barr’s smaller regional warehouses.

Materials handling contractor for the project, Swisslog, installed the Safe-Fix fencing to prevent unauthorised personnel coming into contact with the potentially hazardous equipment, so ensuring high safety standards for staff working in this part of the warehouse. Only authorised personnel can gain access to the guarded areas via interlocked doors fitted at intervals along the runs of machine fencing.

When designing the guarding system, Troax had to oversome several site constraints, in particular the sheer number of conveyors coming in and out of the area, some on quite a steep incline. The modular construction of Safe-Fix makes it ideal for such complex projects.
