Adhesive tape gets to grips with show display

A high-performance double-sided PET adhesive tape developed by tesa proved itself in a demanding situation securing rigid PVC plastic film profiles with strong elastic memory to a foam centred display board for a 7.5m2 exhibition display. This presented a ‘wall of colour’ to highlight the vibrant colours made possible by using Vynacol colouring technology to colour rigid PVC film.

To meet the tight design and performance brief, a CAD-based cutting and positioning point system was developed by DWD UK of Sheerness, Kent, who produced five 1 x 1.5m panels. Over 1000 individual items were precision cut and formed from rolls of coloured film supplied. A 20 mm return was designed into the profiles to allow a convex shape to be formed as well as accommodate the tesa 4965 double-sided tape used for mounting. Fixing had to withstand transit from the UK to Germany, erection and ten days under nine 100w spotlights, subsequent removal and return shipment.

Based on a double-coated high shear strength modified acrylic adhesive over a PET film, tesa 4965 is a 205μm transparent tape with reliable bond performance even to low surface energy substrates.

Temperature resistance is up to 200°C short term and 100°C long term. In tests at 23°C, tesa 4965 has held a 20 x 13mm stainless steel sample plate weighing 500g for over 10,000 minutes.
