Rotaflow develop a bearing for deep sea work

Rotaflow is developing a product that could soon see it helping the oil industry drill in the remotest and deepest places on the planet. The company is being supported by the British Government to pioneer a bearing that will help oil companies to put their pipes on sea beds as deep as 5 km, at working pressures of up to 27 000 psi. These swivels are used to feed fluids to rotating hose reels, mounted on board ship. The reels bail out kilometres of high pressure umbilical hose to the sea bed, where the individual lines can remotely control machinery.

At Rotaflow, the swivels are tested at 1.5 times working pressure (40 500 PSI). Dynamic life tests are also performed to gain vital working life statistics. The swivels require the latest high strength materials and various Finite Element Analyses
