Aids solvent recovery

A fourth 80-tube Unicus dynamic scraped surface heat exchanger has been supplied by HRS to Italy-based Bitolea, a major European waste management company.

The unit, which handles five tonnes/hour of waste, will form part of an evaporator to be used to concentrate chemical waste in the recovery of valuable solvents for resale and to reduce environmental hazards.

The Unicus heat exchangers have enabled Bitolea to achieve the highest levels of evaporation — an increase of 20 to 25 per cent. Prior to using the Unicus, the company was sending about 35 per cent of its waste to a cement factory for burning: now this has significantly fallen, reducing disposal and transport costs considerably — the units are said to pay for themselves in six or seven months.

These Unicus units are non-fouling heat exchangers: chemical waste is pumped down the inside of a tube containing a shaft fitted with scraper blades. The reciprocating longitudinal movement of the shaft means the scrapers are continuously scraping the tubes walls clean.
